Sister Gertrude

$5,000.00

70”x57

I began this quilt with an image of a tree. Upon completion, I had the urge to begin painting the top layer. With my painting background, I was comfortable with the process of applying dabs of acrylic across the surface. While into the rhythm of brushing I was reminded of a brochure about Sister Gertrude Morgan, an African American folk artist, which I had saved for years. I love her work and the rhythm of my brush strokes directly coincided with the spirit of her work. So I superimposed her image in front of the tree image I created.
